Another weekend in jail for Chombo as bail hearig deferred

THE High Court has postponed former finance minister Ignatius Chombo’s bail hearing to next Tuesday.

Chombo, 65, was denied bail by Harare Magistrate Elisha Singano on November 27, and was remanded in prison.

The ex-minister appealed the lower court’s decision and the High Court had been due to sit for the hearing on Friday.

Chombo, detained by the military before Robert Mugabe resigned as president, is accused of corruption, including trying to defraud the central bank in 2004. 

His lawyer says the minister will deny the allegations at his trial.

Meanwhile, the former Zanu PF secretary for administration has offered to trade politics for freedom. He was unceremoniously kicked out of the ruling party on November 19.

In the High Court bail application Chombo’s lawyer, Lovemore Madhuku, said: “Appellant (Chombo) has been a Member of Parliament and cabinet minister for the past 20 years.

"He ceased being a cabinet minister upon the assumption of office of the President [Emerson Mnangagwa] on November 24, 2017.

“He ceased being a Member of Parliament on November 28, 2017.  He is a farmer and may return to his former job as a university lecturer.”

Chombo has previously held the local government, higher and tertiary education and home affairs ministerial portfolios in the past 20 years.

He first appeared in court on November 25 after allegedly having been detained by the military for nine days.
