HARARE: A police officer who this week ran amok while guarding ZRP commissioner general Augustine Chihuri’s home appeared in court Thursday charged with attempted murder.

Hardlife Maukazuva, 28, appeared before Harare magistrate Josephine Sande who advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

The cop, who was not asked to plead, is charged with unlawful entry, malicious damage to property and attempted murder.

According to the state, the suspect broke into Chihuri’s house and looted property before burning down a wing of the property.

And while the house was on fire, he reportedly took gun and fired thirty rounds at his colleagues who had come to attend the scene.

The incident occurred on December 6 at Chihuri’s Greystone Park home around 6am.

According to the State, Maukazuva, who is attached at Morris Depot Projects Office, was on guard at his boss’ house when he came up with a plan rob the property.

He went on to break a window in order to gain entry into the house where stole some goods but was seen by a gardener, Robson Mubaiwa, who confronted him.

The gardener subsequently raised alarm so that neighbours could help him to apprehend the accused whereupon Maukazuva grabbed his loot and hid it in a fountain on the premises.

Meanwhile, another ZRP constable, Kudakwashe Elinadi Jekemu, later arrived at the scene and was briefed about the incident.

Court heard that Jekemu also confronted Maukazuva who became violent and struck his colleague with the back of his gun before going into the house and setting it on fire.

Jekemu reported the matter to bosses at Morris Depot and a reinforcement team was dispatched to the scene.

Upon realising that there were more police officers at the property, Maukazuva opened fire at them but missed his targets.

The accused reportedly fired thirty rounds before trying to commit suicide only to discover that he no longer had ammunition. He was subsequently arrested.
