2008 Premier Soccer League Fixtures

By Nkanyiso Moyo

FOR four consecutive games at the start of the season, Norman Mapeza’s Monomotapa looked like a team destined for relegation. The former national team coach was even put on notice by the club to emphasise their dreadful start to the season.

But six straight wins have followed, the latest victory coming on Thursday against champions Dynamos, previously unbeaten this campaign.

A Tendai Samanje header 10 minutes before the end at Gwanzura Stadium lifted Mapeza's men to second on the league with 18 points from 10 games.

The stunning win came just four days after Monomotapa beat Highlanders 2-1 at Barbourfields Stadium with typical flourish.

On Wednesday, Shooting Stars eased their relegation worries with a 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Eastern Lions.

Meanwhile, 10 games into the CBZ Premier Soccer League, Njube Sundowns’ Evans Chikwaikwai leads the Golden Boot race with 11 goals -- eight of those coming from two hat-tricks and a double.

Hot in pursuit is Highlanders’ new signing, Cuthberth Malajila, who has struck two hat-tricks to take his tally to eight goals in eight matches, while Dynamos’ Edward Sadomba is third with seven goals.

Malajila was the 2007 Golden Boot winner with 15 goals for Chapungu, but that target is likely to be surpassed even before the midway point of the season.
In his debut season last year, Chikwaikwai scored 11 goals – and appears well on course to better than achievement.

Chapungu goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda is intent on embarrassing a few strikers who are yet to make their mark with three goals for the league leaders. He has only conceded three.
