MONOMOTAPA have drawn level on points with leaders Chapungu at the summit of the CBZ Premier Soccer League table after crushing Eastern Lions 4-1 on Saturday – their seventh straight victory.

Norman Mapeza’s team has not tasted defeat since ending a four-game losing streak at the beginning of the season.

Champions Dynamos were 2-1 winners over premiership debutants, Gunners.

Highlanders put their stuttering campaign back on track with an emphatic 3-0 drubbing of Motor Action in Harare.

But Monomotapa continued to grab the headlines with a seven-match winning streak that now establishes them as firm favourites to be top midway through the season. With a little bit of ambition, they could write a fairytale by wresting the title from Dynamos, whom they have already beaten.

Daniel Zokoto shone in the mauling of Lions, weighing in with two goals – his second and Monomotapa’s fourth a breathtaking precision strike taken under pressure 11 minutes from time.

Asani Nhongo opened the floodgates, Zokoto scored a second and Charles Chiutsa chipped in a third over Tapiwa Mafunga with Lions screaming offside. Then Zokoto emphasised the gap in quality between top and bottom table with a stunning 79th minute shot that jerked Mapeza off his seat in appreciation.

Lions – looking wearily like sheep ready for slaughter at this stage of the season – grabbed a face-saver through Tawanda Mareya.

At Gwanzura Stadium on Sunday, Edward Sadomba rediscovered his goal scoring touch with devastating consequences for battling Gunners.

Sadomba’s two goals kept Dynamos level on points with Highlanders, but with a game in hand over the bitter rivals.

Motor Action’s new coach Lindile Dube watched in horror as a Douglas Zimbago double and a third from Cuthbert Malajila sealed an emphatic win for Highlanders.

The irony was that Highlanders coach Methembe Ndlovu needed the victory more after consecutive defeats against Gunners 9away) and a home drubbing by Monomotapa called his future into question.

Zimbago’s first on 16 minutes was pure textbook stuff. The little magician left Mike Mhungu and Samuel Phiri for dead before stabbing the ball past veteran keeper Witness Munkuli. With a career that has taken him to Hwange, Dynamos and CAPS United, Munkuli will admit this was one of the better ones he conceded.

Malajila, a permanent regular on the Highlanders score-sheet, got his customary goal six minutes before the half hour with a looping header from a Gift Lunga cross that deceived Munkuli.

Zimbago finished the rout on 51 minutes after Malajila roasted Marere on the right flank before teeing the little man to slot home at close range.

Leading scorer Evans Chikwaikwai struck a double as Sundowns beat league leaders Chapungu 3-0. Patrick Tom scored the third.

Chapungu remained top with 21 points, the same as Monomotapa, but with a superior goal difference.

At Chibuku Stadium, youth international Ovidy Karuru set up Isaac Chapura for the only goal of the match as Masvingo edged early-season pacesetters Kiglon 1-0.

At Gwanzura, CAPS United finally gave their fans something to smile about as they battled to a 1-0 win over Lengthens.

Nyasha Mushekwi struck with seven minutes remaining to give new coach Joisten Mathuthu his first win in two matches.
