FORMER Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu made his return to the national team as India A batsmen took control on the first day of the four-day cricket match against Zimbabwe Select at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.

After the visiting captain Mohammad Kaif won the toss and chose to bat, India A were 331-5 at the close of play with half centuries for Robin Uthappa (88), Parthiv Patel (67), Rohit Sharma (66) and Kaif (63).

Zimbabwe Select captain Prosper Utseya and all-rounder Elton Chigumbura claimed two wickets each while paceman Chris Mpofu grabbed the other wicket.

Chigumbura trapped Sharma leg before wicket off what was to be the last ball of the day.

But judging from Tuesday’s proceedings, India A will have to declare their first innings if they are interested in at least getting a result by Friday.

It was not just the bowling that the Zimbabwe Select struggled with, there was also disappointment in the fielding as Vusi Sibanda (two), Utseya, Tino Mawoyo and Graeme Cremer dropped catches.

Taibu marked his return to the fold in a familiar wicket keeping role and capped the day with a catch that claimed Kaif’s wicket.

Brief Scorecard:
Toss: India A
Day One: India A 1st innings 331 (Uthappa 88, Pate 67, Kaif 63, Sharma 66).
