PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai returned home on Monday after treatment in Botswana for injuries in a car crash that killed his wife.

The tragedy comes at a difficult time for Tsvangirai, who faces the daunting task of rescuing the ruined country under a new unity government with President Robert Mugabe, his old rival.

Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change has said it will conduct its own probe into the accident to see whether foul play was involved.

Spokesmen for both the British and American governments said they believed the crash, which killed Tsvangirai's wife, Susan, had been a tragic accident.

Tsvangirai, whose face was swollen, was met by officials from the party and government at Harare International Airport. He did not speak to journalists.

The Prime Minister's wife is to be buried on Wednesday, his spokesman said.

Many Zimbabweans are suspicious over the crash, which took place on a potholed highway, one of the country's most dangerous and busiest routes.

The driver of a United States government truck that sideswiped Tsvangirai's vehicle was on Monday expected to be charged with culpable homicide, his lawyer said. - Reuters
