MDC, Zanu PF take on Moyo in Tsholotsho By
Staff Reporter Hundreds of villagers came out to meet Mugabe as he made a double stop at Dinyane Business Centre and Sipepa communal lands, but there was no masking the huge task his party faces to wrest the seat from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change and Moyo. Zimbabweans vote in parliamentary elections on Thursday next week. Journalist Dumisani Muleya summed up the race for Tsholotsho: "Zanu PF has fielded a thoroughly unpopular candidate while the MDC has fielded a candidate who fared badly in Parliament. Nothing short of a miracle can stop Moyo from winning Tsholotsho." Tens of Zimbabwean exiles based in South Africa have made their journey back to Tsholotsho to cast their ballots, our correspondents say. "They seem to be all rooting for Moyo. Almost every car, scotch-cart, tractor and in cases animals carry Moyo's posters. It is a strange thing to say but his face is all over Tsholotsho," said a correspondent. MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai is expected in Tsholotsho at the weekend to stake his party's bid for the consituency. Senior party officials are quitely hoping their candidate and outgoing MP Mtoliki Sibanda will pull a surprise to prize the seat and confirm the party's dominance on the Matabeleland political scene. The Zanu PF candidate
Musa Mathema, wife of Bulawayo governor Cain Mathema, has been battling
scandals about her own private life. She was a maid at Mathema's home
when he was ambassador to Zambia before they fell in love and Mathema
ditched his wife. |
