POLICE in England have launched a manhunt after a Zimbabwean nurse was found murdered in her flat.

Police want to question Daniel Tambengwa, 30, who lived with the slain 32-year-old Ella Chimweta, a nurse at Colchester General Hospital.

Police believe a 12-year-old girl may have spent a week alone in the flat not realising Chimweta had been murdered and her body hidden under a bed.

Essex police hunting Tambengwa said they had found his blue Ford Mondeo dumped at Heathrow Airport, raising suspicions he may have skipped the country.

Tambengwa could be using false identity, but is believed to be originally from Cameroon.

A police spokesman said: “We have located the car at Heathrow Airport. We are following up this new information in our search for his whereabouts.”

Police recovered Chimweta’s body from her flat in Weetmans Drive, Colchester, on Tuesday, July 17, after the girl alerted neighbours.

Chimweta had been dead for a week and a post-mortem examination showed she died of asphyxiation – a condition of being deprived oxygen, most probably through suffocation.

Chimweta last worked a shift on July 9, finishing at 2.30PM. Police say her partner Tambengwa, who lived at the flat, was last seen there on the same day she last reported for work.

Tambengwa is described as black, stocky, with short hair and may possibly have facial hair.

A hospital spokesman said Chimweta joined Colchester General Hospital after working as a nurse in London. She worked on the same ward throughout her time and was well liked.

Barbara Woodrow, deputy director of nursing at Essex Rivers Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, spoke of her shock.

She said: "She was a good nurse and a very private person.

"Her colleagues were shocked and saddened, and the Trust extends its condolences to her family and friends."

Anybody with any information relating to the murder of Chimweta is asked to call Essex Police's Major Investigation Team on 01277 262220 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
