A 26-YEAR-OLD Zimbabwean man has been arrested in Sheffield, England, charged with the murder of his step mother.

Police have confirmed a 59-year-old woman -- also from Zimbabwe -- died after suffering stab wounds at a flat in Glencoe Road, Norfolk Park, at 10am on Sunday.

Police were called to the quiet neighbourhood after neighbours saw a man armed with a carving knife sitting at the side of the road.

Neighbours said he was rocking backwards and forwards before stripping naked.

One man, who did not want to be named, told a local newspaper: “I called the police after I saw a guy on the pavement ranting and raving and wielding a carving knife.

“I was on the phone to police giving them a running commentary. He started to undress and put his knife and his clothes in the wheelie bin outside.

“Then he started throwing rocks at cars parked on the street.”

Gwen Hardy, another neighbour said: “My husband came down and said there is a chap on the street and he is fighting with the police, he is stark naked, no clothes on.

“I just came out and the police managed to control him and he was laid out on the pavement, and the next minute they fetched the lady out of the flat.

“I felt sad because this is a very quiet area and we had no problems before. Everybody felt sad that things like this should happen.”

Other witnesses said when police arrived and tried to restrain the man, he tried to attack the officers.

One man said: "He still had a brick in his hand. He was wielding the brick at the police officers but they managed to subdue him.

"There were about 10 police cars and two ambulances. It was mayhem. They sealed off Glencoe Road and later put up a white tent. This is a really quiet area, there's never any trouble. It's quite shocking to have something like this happen on your doorstep."

Police have not named the woman as her next of kin are yet to be informed.

But family friends told New Zimbabwe.com that the dead woman was the man’s step mother.

A friend said: “The murder suspect’s own mother died recently in Zimbabwe. It would appear he was not in favour of his father remarrying, certainly not this woman who is now dead. He had accused his father of neglecting his mother in favour of the step-mom.”

The suspect is not known to have mental instabilities.
