PSL title race back on after long break

THE BancABC Sup8r semi-finals finally return this weekend with FC Platinum taking on Monomotapa on Saturday while Shabanie Mine will engage Dynamos on Sunday at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo.

Both matches start at 1400hrs and will be broadcast live on Supersport 9, now also available in South Africa.

The matches – set to be broadcast live on satellite channel, Supersport, and also available in South Africa - had been postponed for two weeks due to the Warriors’ participation in the Chan qualifiers.

Platinum will be seeking revenge on a Monomotapa side that booted them out of the Mbada Diamonds Cup semi-finals at Sakubva last season and whom they have not beaten in any cup competition in three years.

The platinum miners, under their third coach of the season Lloyd Mutasa who replaced Tennant Chilumba and Tendai Chikuni, have won the Independence Trophy and the Bob88 Super Cup in the last three seasons.

Mutasa believes he carries the magic wand with him in every cup competition.

“I won the Bob87 in my first season at Dynamos and won the Swazi Bank Cup with Green Mamba in my first season,” he said.

“I am always lucky in any competition that I take part in for the first time and I am sure we will go through to the final.”

At his disposal are Warriors stars Charles Sibanda, whose sole goal send the Warriors to the Chan finals set for South Africa next year, Donald Ngoma, Ali Sadiki and Nelson Maziwisa.

Monomotapa coach Biggie Zuze acknowledges things are not going well for his team but insists that history is on his side.

“We have not been playing well in the league and then we have had this long break. But I think we will win the match because we have not lose to them in any cup competition,” he said.

On Sunday, Shabanie coach Luke Masomere will continue his mission of seeking the asbestos miners’ only second piece of silverware.

Shabanie beat Dynamos 1-0 in the final of the BP League Cup in 2001, but Masomere is not banking on history. “The best team of the day will win,” he said.

For his part, Dynamos coach Kalisto Pasuwa is wary of the so-called small teams in cup games. “There no small teams in cup competitions and I hope the long layoff will not affect our plans,” he said.

Devon Chafa, despite a pending doping case with Fifa, is expected to appear in the blue and white colours of Dynamos at Barbourfields, while left back Augustine Mbara has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. This might mean a return for attacking left back Ocean Mushure.

Meanwhile, while the Warriors will be in camp for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Mozambique, Castle Lager Premier Soccer League action will be expected to resume to cover for lost time.
