DERECK Chisora moved one step closer to securing a fight with one of the Klitschko brothers after he defeated Edmund Gerber to become European Heavyweight champion on Saturday night.

Chisora defeated the 25-year-old Kazakhstan-born German fighter in the fifth round at London Olympic Park's Copper Box Arena.

Two years after he was controversially beaten by Robert Helenius in Finland for the same belt, Chisora dominated from the first bell.

The Zimbabwe-born Londoner recorded his third win in succession since losing to David Haye last summer, having stopped both Hector Alfredo Avila and Malik Scott earlier this year.

Chisora tested Gerber early on with a few uppercuts before attacking his head and body with a volley of shots.

Gerber came back into the fight in the fourth round which was much more even, but Chisora's workrate earned him a stoppage in the fifth, with the referee waving it away.

It was an emotional fight for Chisora following the death of matchmaker Dean Powell.Chisora paid tribute to Powell following his victory.
He told BoxNation: "One of my main guys isn't here for me tonight. Rest in peace brother, and I love you."
Promoter Frank Warren added: "I'm really proud. It was an emotional night for him. The engine's there. The brain's there."

Warren also suggested a possible bout with Tyson Fury, whose fight against David Haye next weekend was called off due to the latter suffering a deep facial cut.

Warren said on the BoxNation Twitter feed: "@dellboychisora and Tyson Fury in December - What a fight that would be!"
