Highlanders 4-0 CAPS United

RAHMAN Kutsanzira and Ozias Zibande struck two beautiful headers as Highlanders crushed Caps United 4-0 in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday to leap back to the top of the standings.

With just seven minutes on the clock, Kuda Mahachi headed the ball to Welcome Ndiweni who set Kutsanzira up and he in-turn out-jumped Tapiwa Kumbuyani to beat goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube all systems out.

Caps came out of their shell in an attempt to hit back immediately as the powerful Dominic Chungwa tried to outrun the old legs of 37-year old Bosso skipper Innocent Mapuranga, but Bruce Kangwa covered well on the left flank.

The visitors were overpowered in midfield by the Bosso trio of Mahachi, anchor-man Eric Mudzingwa who cut off the supply to Malawian international Ishmael Thindwa, and Welcome Ndiweni.

As Caps went in search of the leveller, Mahachi broke free on the left and his pin point cross was headed home by Zibande in the 37th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Charles Sibanda could have made it three but shot just wide after being set up by Ndiweni while his former team mate at FC Platinum also failed to score from close range from another Mahachi cross, opting to use his right leg when heading seemed to be the simpler option.

Caps coach Taurayi Mangwiro, sensing danger, removed Tinashe Mukanahiri in the just before the break for Hardlife Zvirekwi but suffered a setback when skipper Kumbuyani limped off injured to be replaced by Moses Muchenje.

United started the second half on a high with Thindwa missing the target by a whisker in the 48th minute while Chungwa forced a save from Highlanders goalkeeper Arial Sibanda a couple of minutes later.

But, five minutes later, it was 3-0 with Mahachi on the score sheet.

Receiving the ball on the right wing, he evaded Ronald Pfumbidzai and with Zibande calling for the ball inside the box, the Mamelodi Sundowns-bound attacking midfielder went for the kill and beat Dube to the near post.

Caps’ Chungwa almost pulled one back in the 80th minute but was denied by the upright with the goalkeeper well beaten.

But eight minutes before the end, super sub Cleopas Dube, who had come in for Charles Sibanda, sealed a miserable day for Caps when, with only his second touch of the ball, beat the Caps goalie at the near post after being fed by Simon Munawa, with a thunderous strike to send BF into frenzy.

At Ascot Stadium in Gweru, Chapungu and Shabanie Mine drew 1-1. Talbot Mthombeni scored for Shabanie in the 38th minute before Hillary Mugoniwa ensured a share of the spoils with a late strike in the 82nd minute.

At Rimuka in Kadoma, Chicken Inn beat Black Rhinos 1-0 with former Soccer Star of the Year Clemence Matawu getting the solitary goal in the first half.

Elsewhere, ZPC Kariba continued their fine patch, burying troubled Triangle 5-1 at Gibbo Stadium in Chiredzi and moved into second place on the table due to an inferior goal difference to Highlanders.

Highlanders have scored 13 goals and conceded two while ZPC has scored eight and conceded two.
