THE government of host country Morocco has said the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations should be postponed because of the Ebola epidemic.

The biennial competition is scheduled to be held between 17 January and 8 February 2015.

The request to delay the event has been lodged with organisers Confederation of African Football (Caf).

CAF must now decide whether to allow the tournament – which is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 8 – to be delayed.

Qualifying matches have already been moved because of the virus, while Ebola-hit nations were banned from competing in some sports at the Youth Olympics in China in August.

More than 4,000 people have died in the Ebola epidemic that broke out in west Africa at the start of the year.

The Morocco health ministry made the plea in the wake of their decision "to avoid events which involve those countries affected by the Ebola virus."
