HIGHLANDERS on Monday confirmed Mandla ‘Lulu’ Mpofu as the first team assistant coach to new boss Bongani Mafu.

Also joining the new technical team, as previously reported by New Zimbabwe, is team manager Netsai ‘Super’ Moyo while Peter Nkomo has been retained as the goalkeeper’s coach.

Sebastian Ndlovu is the new team medic with Loyal Nyika the physiotherapist. And because of a funding cut by sponsors, BancABC, Highlanders have abolished the post of physical trainer and kit manager, previously held by Majaha Ndlovu and Vezigama Dlodlo respectively.

There is also no place for Cosmas Zulu, the technical director, in the new set up, announced by the club’s chief executive Ndumiso Gumede.

"Our sponsors have officially told us that they will reduce the sponsorship for this year. This meant that we had to exercise serious austerity measures as well,” he said.

Highlanders would up their trials on Monday and get down to serious business on Tuesday as Mafu seeks to build a team that would draw back the fans to Barbourfields after a poor 2014 season which saw them end in fifth place in the log standings.

The Bulawayo giants, because of their placing last season, will not be able to defend the Mbada Diamonds Cup they won in 2013.

The competition is for the top four only after the budget was whittled down to $250 000 and will be staged next month before the new season starts. The four teams that qualified are two time winner Dynamos, ZPC Kariba, Caps United and FC Platinum.
