Premiership relegation battle intensifies

THE Castle Lager Premiership relegation battle rolls into life on Saturday when Flame Lily host Dynamos at Larfarge Stadium in Harare while Tsholotsho welcome Whawha to White City.

Flame Lily brewed a shocked last Sunday when they thumped Triangle 3-0 at Gibbo and could be the surprise team to derail Dynamos’ dreams of a fifth consecutive league title.

Dynamos will be without Rodreck Mutuma and Ocean Mushure who travelled with the Warriors for the second leg of the African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier to Lesotho on Friday morning.

The third player Blessing Moyo is injured and was dropped from the travelling contingent.

Flame Lily are in 13th place with 23 points and a win will see them move to 26 points, the same as Buffaloes who host Hwange 24 hours later at Sakubva in Mutare.

And should Buffaloes fail to beat the coalminers and Flame Lily win, the army side will be in serious trouble.

Tsholotsho are at home to equally struggling Whawha and three points will be good for Lizwe Sweswe’s side in their fight against the chop.

He said: “Like I have always said, we aim to pick a point or three in every remaining match we play and I am sure the boys are aware of the challenge ahead.

“We have five games left and we need maximum points to stay alive.”

Sweswe was recently joined by former Highlanders coach Bongani Mafu on the technical bench as they upped their bid for a second dance with the Premiership big guns in 2016.

On Sunday, basement side Dongo Sawmill, who still have a mathematical chance of surviving relegation, host ZPC Kariba at Vengere in Rusape.

Dongo have 18 points from 25 matches and should they win all their remaining five matches they will get to 33 points and, depending on results elsewhere, they could still survive.

FIXTURES

Saturday: Flame Lily vs Dynamos (Lafarge), Tsholotsho vs Whawha (White
City Stadium)

Sunday: Buffaloes vs Hwange (Sakubva), Dongo Sawmill vs ZPC Kariba (Vengere)
