CHICKEN Inn skipper Danny ‘Deco’ Phiri is back in training ahead of the 2016 Caf Champions League opener first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns on February 13 after two weeks on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

Phiri was dropped from the Warriors squad that kicked off their 2016 African Nations Championships (Chan) campaign against Zambia on Tuesday afternoon, due to a knee injury sustained in November last year.

He was injured in the Easycall Cup final against Highlanders together with midfielder Tafadzwa Kutinyu, who was also dropped from the Warriors squad.

Coach Joey Antipas arrived from South Africa on Monday evening where he was ‘spying’ on Sundowns and watched them beat University of Pretoria 2-1 on Saturday evening and is delighted with the return of his captain.

“It’s good that he is back, but we can’t rush him back into full training until the doctors give us the go ahead, he is having gym sessions. So for now, he will just follow the doctors’ instructions
and take it step by step.

“We have three weeks to go before the match and perhaps he would have recovered by then so that we have a full squad for the match,” Antipas said.

Chicken Inn have four players — goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, defender Lawrence Mhlanga and striker Edmore Chirambadare and new signing Moses Demera - in the Warriors squad that is in Rwanda for the Chan finals that end on February 7, provided the Warriors go all the way.

The Bulawayo side will be making their debut in the Champions League after winning the 2015 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title for the first time in their history since promotion in 2011.

Harare City will represent Zimbabwe in the Caf Confederation Cup after winning the Chibuku Super Cup last year, beating Dynamos 2-1 in the final at the National Sports Stadium on October 31.
