Warriors secure Cameroon friendly

THE Warriors’ build-up to next month’s Afcon finals received a great boost following the sealing of an international friendly match, with Cameroon and a camp in Yaoundé just before the tournament.

With Cameroonian conditions similar to neighbouring Gabon, Zimbabwe will camp for almost a week in Yaoundé, before flying to Gabon for the tournaments which begins on 14 January.

The Warriors are in Group B together with Senegal, Algeria and Tunisia and will be based in Franceville.

Having already played Zambia and Tanzania, on Boxing Day the Warriors will play Ivory Coast in another preparatory match before the Cameroon game.

Cameroon’s official match agent Joe Kamga, outlined Zimbabwe’s itinerary in Yaoundé in his correspondence with Zifa.

“After our conversation I address you this email to offer the possibility to play a friendly match, between you ‘A’ men national team and the national team of Cameroon of the same status on 10th January in Cameroon. The conditions of the match will be as follows:

“We can invite you for four days/three nights, 32 persons in Cameroon in full board accommodation, local transportation, security, match logistics, visas etc,” Kamga wrote to Zifa.

“You will see below the authorisation of Cameroon FA. Please bear in mind that Cameroon could be the ideal place to continue your preparation, before going to Gabon since Yaoundé is 35 minutes flight to Gabon (Franceville), and you can go by bus (2h35mins) also as other teams camping in Cameroon will do.

“Food, drinks and ingredients are the same in Cameroon. The weather is also the same in both countries. There is no team from your group camping in Cameroon so the discretion is guaranteed,”

Zifa in turn agreed to the conditions of the friendly match.

“The association has accepted a proposal by Cameroon to play a friendly match on the 10th of January, 5 days before Zimbabwe’s Afcon opener against Algeria. The game against the Indomitable Lions will be Zimbabwe’s fourth and final match for head coach Calisto Pasuwa to assess the Warriors’ preparedness for a tough Afcon challenge,” said Zifa.

Zimbabwe will be making their third ever Afcon appearance.
